"Eventing" as it is commonly called is one of the fastest growing segments of the $15.2 billion dollar American horse industry. More popular in Europe, international events in England draw some of the largest crowds of any sporting events in the world. Eventing is popular among sponsors because it embodies many of the traits desirable in the corporate world: teamwork, trust, boldness, communication, confidence, elegance and stamina. Eventing is the triathlon of the equestrian realm. It was developed from calvary competitions during the early 1900's. It is the supreme challenge for horse and rider, testing their partnership and athleticism in three demanding phases. Dressage -- This is always the first part of the competition.
It is comprised of gymnastic movements performed in a prescribed pattern.
It tests obedience, suppleness and attentiveness of the horse and the
perfection of communication between horse and rider. Cross Country -- Eventing's best known phase, it is the
heart of the sport. The horse and rider negotiate fixed, immovable obstacles
at a high rate of speed over challenging terrain. The rider may inspect
the course ahead of time but the horse sees it for the first time during
the actual competition.
